Burton Young Wives Group raised money for a new slide. Parish Council Chairman, Jack Burt, tries it out - 1976.
"The group decided three years previously that it was time the older children, like the toddlers, had a slide in the village playing field. But the Young Wives did not tell anyone of their plan as they raised money with coffee mornings and barn dances etc., so it was a complete surprise when they handed the Parsih Council a cheque for over £300 in May, 1976.
In the following 12 months a grant was obtained to top up the funds such that there was enough for a new slide. The slide was officially handed over by the Young Wives Group Leaders, Mrs June Oakford and Mrs Mary Bailey.
Members of the Parish Council and the Young Wives Group attended the ceremony which lost any air of formality when Jack Burt decided to try the slide for himself. He was followed by councillors and the wives who enjoyed it as much as the children who followed them."
